What is the history behind crochet?

The art of crocheting seems to have originated in the early 1800s, with the first known magazine with crochet instructions being published in 1823. Crochet stitches were often used to create decorative lace pieces, purses, and bags. In the 1800s, decorative lace was quite popular, but it was expensive to produce and purchase. Crocheting provided a much more affordable way for lower-class women to achieve the same look at a much lower cost.

In the 1920s and 30s, crochet became even more popular, and crocheted hats, handbags, and embellishments on dresses were very fashionable.

World War II led to a decline in activities such as crochet, since materials were scarce and priorities shifted. In the post-war 1960s and 70s, crochet made a comeback with many new patterns, such as colourful blankets, shawls, vests, and scarves.

Today you will see lots of colourful crocheted items such as blankets, toques, mittens, sweaters, stuffed animals, pillows, etc. It is amazing how much an art form like crochet can develop over the years, from pieces of lace to elaborate, multicoloured, fluffy sweaters and stuffed animals.
