-Yarn
You can work with any yarn or simple strand, but the best type of yarn for beginners is medium-weight cotton or acrylic yarn. The reason behind this is that you don't want to use a yarn that makes it hard to see your stitches or that falls apart easily. Although fuzzy yarns like chenille or eyelash are fun to use, it's best to stay away from them when you are just learning how to crochet, since they make it very hard to see your stitches.
-Hooks
For crochet hooks, you typically use a 2.25mm to a 3.5mm hook for lightweight yarn, a 4mm to 6mm hook for medium-weight yarn, and a 6.5mm hook and up for heavyweight yarn. Choosing the right hook for your yarn can sometimes be challenging, as you need to base your hook size on your yarn tension and what is most comfortable for you. Oftentimes, you have to make a few projects before you find out what is best for you.

-Scissors
It is better to have sewing scissors because they cut more effectively, but you can use regular craft scissors, too.
-Yarn Needle
You will need a yarn needle for sewing pieces together and weaving in the ends of your project. You can sometimes get away with using a crochet hook, but it is a lot easier to use a yarn needle.
-Stitch Markers
You will need stitch markers in your projects to mark your rows, but you can get away with using things you would have around your house if you don't want to spend money on them.
If you are making amigurumi projects, you will also need supplies like safety eyes, thread, a sewing needle, stuffing, and you won't be able to get away without having a yarn needle.
These are the basic crochet tools you will need to start a project:
